CURATORIAL TEXT FOR THE EXHIBITION

Rita Koszorús za posledné roky rozvinula konzekventný abstraktný maliarsky program pracujúci s témou nostalgie ale aj identity či pamäti. Dlhodobo sa zaoberá výskumom modernistickej estetiky a jeho vplyvom na súčastnosť. Za svoju tvorbu dostala tento rok aj významné ocenenie Maľba.

Na výstave Hľadanie Mnémosyné Rita odkazuje na jednej strane na knihu Marcela Prousta a jeho čas, ktorý už odplynul, ale aj na mýtickú bohyňu pamäte Mnémosyné, reprezentovanú riekou v protikladnom postavení k Léthé. Keď sa z nej napijeme, budeme si pamätať svoju (melancholickú) minulosť. S témou kolektívnej pamäte autorka už nejakú dobu pracuje a vzťahuje ju najmä k svojmu detstvu v 90. rokoch, reprezentovanému špecifickou farebnosťou tej doby, ale aj k európskej výtvarnej minulosti. V dielach nazvaných Schmerzbild nadväzuje na medzivojnový modernizmus a najmä dada Kurta Schwittersa.

V aktuálnej sérii reaguje na nedávnu rezidenciu v portugalskom Porte a na svoj prvý intenzívny kontakt s oceánom, pri ktorom experimentovala s využitím priehľadov v kolážach a kresbách. Podobný princíp vzniká v inštalácii výstavy v ATELIERii XIII, kde divák má možnosť svojim pohybom vytvárať nové obrazy. Hlavnou témou sa tak okrem vody v jej rôznych formách stávajú slané slzy našej individuálnej minulosti ako protiklad slaného mora kolektívnej pamäte. Môžeme mať rovnaké spomienky na detstvo? Môžeme milovať oceán, ktorý sme nikdy nestretli? More sa mení na pary a voda prechádza z pevných kryštálikov do tekutých sĺz a práve transformácia je to, čo Ritu zaujíma. Jej precízne budované abstraktné obrazy v sebe obsahujú transformáciu modernizmu, ale aj otázky našej osobnej a kolektívnej identity reprezentované univerzálnym pocitom nostalgie v momente, keď sa človek ocitá sám zoči voči oceánu.

In recent years, Rita Koszorús has developed a consequent abstract painting program that deals with the topic of nostalgia but also identity and memory. She has long been engaged in research of modernist aesthetics and its impact on the present. This year, she also received a significant award for her work in the Maľba competition. 

In the exhibition The Search for Mnémosyné, on one hand, Rita refers to Marcel Proust’s book and his time, which has already passed, and on the other hand, to the mythical goddess of memory Mnémosyné, represented by a river in the opposite position to Léthé. When we drink from it, we will remember our (melancholic) past. The author has been working with the topic of collective memory for a while now and relates it mainly to her childhood in the 90s, represented by specific colorfulness of that time as well as to the European artistic past. In her works called Schmerzbild, she relates to interwar modernism and especially to dada of Kurt Schwitters.

In her current series, she responds to her recent residence in Porto, Portugal, and to her first intensive contact with the ocean, during which she experimented with the use of see-through elements in collages and drawings. A similar principle arises in the installation of the exhibition in ATELIER XIII, where the viewer has the opportunity to create new pictures with his movement. In addition to water in its various forms, salty tears of our individual past as the opposite of a salty sea of a collective memory become the main theme. Can we have the same childhood memories? Can we love the ocean that we have never met? The sea turns into steam and water passes from little solid crystals to liquid tears, and it is the transformation that interests Rita. Her precisely constructed abstract images contain a transformation of modernism and also questions of our personal and collective identity represented by a universal feeling of nostalgia in the moment when one finds oneself face-to-face with the ocean.
